Umar Bingel was returning from market when abducted; body dumped in pit after execution; principal suspect arrested, weapons recovered
The Niger State Police Command has arrested four vigilante operatives in connection with the abduction, killing, and robbery of a 32-year-old cattle trader, Umar Bingel, in Kontagora Local Government Area.
Bingel, a resident of the Dadin-Kowa area, was returning home from the market after selling his cattle when he was intercepted by suspected vigilante members. According to police, he was dispossessed of his motorcycle and N1.5 million—believed to be proceeds from the cattle sale—before being killed and his body dumped in a pit.
The Investigation
A report was received at the Kontagora Police Station on February 12, 2026, at approximately 4 p.m., prompting operatives attached to the Kontagora Area Command to launch an immediate investigation.
The probe led to the arrest of three vigilante members—Suleiman Umar, Tanko Sale, and Rabiu Bako—who, during interrogation, confessed to having knowledge of the crime. They revealed that Bingel was killed by another vigilante group allegedly led by two suspects identified as Danbaba and Smalli of Farin-Shinge village.
On February 15, police arrested the principal suspect, Danbaba, who subsequently led operatives to the scene where Bingel's decomposed body was recovered from a pit. The remains were taken to the General Hospital in Kontagora before being released to the family for burial.
Recovered Items
During the operation, police recovered:
- The victim's Bajaj motorcycle
- Three locally made guns
- Two dane guns
- Four rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition
Police Statement
The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, detailing the sequence of events that led to the arrests.
"On February 12, 2026, at about 4 p.m., a report was received that one Umar Bingel, 32 years, of the Dadin-Kowa area of Kontagora, was abducted by suspected vigilante men to an unknown location while returning from the market," Abiodun stated.
"The victim was abducted with his motorcycle and a sum of one million, five hundred thousand naira, being proceeds of the sale of his cows. Police operatives attached to Kontagora Area Command commenced an investigation, which led to the arrest of Suleiman Umar, Tanko Sale and Rabiu Bako, all vigilante members."
Prosecution Pending
Police said the suspects remain under investigation and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for prosecution.
The case highlights the troubling reality that even those entrusted with community security can sometimes become the perpetrators of violence. Vigilante groups, often formed to fill security gaps in rural areas, operate with minimal oversight—creating opportunities for abuse when individuals within their ranks turn criminal.
For the family of Umar Bingel, justice may eventually come through the courts. But no conviction can undo the image of a husband and father whose body was dumped in a pit after he simply tried to sell his cattle and return home.
