Police Disrupt Suspected Cult Gathering at Oyo Secondary School, Arrest Three

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three individuals suspected of belonging to a cult following the disruption of a gathering at a secondary school in Oyo town.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the operation was based on credible intelligence and is part of the police's ongoing efforts to combat cultism and violent crime in the state.

Acting on a tip-off, operatives from the Atiba Divisional Police Headquarters mobilized to Bode Thomas Secondary School, where a large group of people dressed in black were seen assembling for what was suspected to be a secret cult meeting. Upon the arrival of the police, approximately 30 individuals reportedly fled into nearby bushes.

Three suspects were apprehended at the scene:

- Jelili Taiwo Kazeem, 20
- Toheeb Adediran, 25
- Ayomide Taiwo, 23

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of the Aiye Confraternity. They claimed the gathering was to celebrate a member’s birthday. Further investigation revealed that Toheeb Adediran, a commercial motorcycle rider, transported some of the attendees to the location. His motorcycle was impounded for investigation.

A search of the area led to the recovery of one axe, one black cap, and the motorcycle, all believed to be connected to the group's activities.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Anti-Cultism Squad for a thorough investigation. The suspects are currently cooperating with authorities and assisting in efforts to apprehend other fleeing members.

CP Haruna also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children closely and discourage involvement in cultism, emphasizing the serious legal and social consequences of such activities.
