Pope Leo XIV has voiced deep concern over recent deadly attacks in Nigeria, urging authorities to strengthen efforts to safeguard civilians.
In a post on social media platform X on Sunday, the pontiff said he learned “with sorrow and concern” of the assaults that resulted in significant loss of life across several states. He offered prayers for the victims and emphasized the need for action.
“I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” the Pope stated.
His remarks follow a series of violent incidents reported last week:
* In Kwara State, gunmen attacked Woro village, burning shops and a traditional ruler’s home, forcing residents to flee.
* In Katsina State, suspected bandits killed more than 20 people in an assault on Doma community in Faskari Local Government Area.
* In Benue State, security forces repelled an attack by suspected bandits in Anwase village, Kwande Local Government Area, though several houses were set ablaze.
The attacks have heightened security concerns and caused displacement in affected communities.
