Kings Park Rangers, a non-league football club in England, has announced the death of its Nigerian winger, Saburi Olayinka Adeniji.
Adeniji passed away at Queen’s Hospital on Friday after remaining in a coma for more than three weeks due to a severe brain stem injury. He is survived by his wife and young daughter, who are based in Nigeria.
The club had first informed the public of his condition in mid-January, calling for prayers while he was in intensive care. Although the exact cause of his injury remains unclear, the hospital kept him on life support to allow his family, who arrived in the UK on Saturday, to be present before his passing.
Before his death was officially confirmed, the club held a minute’s silence in his honour during a match on January 31.
This tragic incident follows the recent death of another non-league player, Billy Vigar, who sustained a fatal brain injury during a match last September.
