Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) sharply criticized former President Donald Trump on Friday for sharing a video on social media that depicted Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys, calling it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”
The controversial post, a minute-long video promoting baseless election conspiracy theories, included a clip substituting the former first couple with animated monkeys dancing to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The imagery echoes a historically racist trope that has long been used to demean Black people.
Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate and a longtime Trump ally once considered a potential running mate, urged the former president to take down the video. “Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House,” he wrote on X. “The President should remove it.”
While the video drew widespread condemnation from Democrats, Scott’s rebuke carries particular weight given his close political relationship with Trump and his standing within the Republican Party. His response highlights the divisive nature of the post even among the former president’s supporters.
