'They Fled Into the Night': Troops Overrun Notorious Bandit Stronghold in Benue, Seize Arsenal of Weapons and Ammunition

Operation Whirl Stroke forces dislodge criminal syndicate from Mtan Village hideout after fierce gun battle; red Toyota vehicle demobilized to prevent future attacks

Troops of the Nigerian Army have dealt a significant blow to a notorious armed syndicate operating in Benue State, storming their forest hideout in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area and recovering a cache of weapons following an intense firefight.

The operation, executed by Sector 1 of the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke, targeted the stronghold of a wanted bandit leader believed to be operating from Mtan Village in Utange Council Ward. Acting on actionable intelligence, troops advanced on the location and engaged the armed suspects in a fierce exchange of gunfire, according to a statement issued Sunday by JTF spokesperson Ahmad Zubairu.

Fleeing in Disarray

The army reported that after confronting superior firepower, the criminals abandoned their enclave and fled into the surrounding bush, leaving behind critical evidence and military-grade equipment.

"During the subsequent exploitation of the area, troops recovered two motorcycles believed to belong to the notorious bandit," Zubairu stated, alongside a significant haul of weapons and ammunition.

The recovery list included:

- Eight magazines
- 162 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm special ammunition
- 10 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition
- 44 rounds of 9mm ammunition
- Links of 7.62mm NATO ammunition
- Seven empty 7.62mm NATO cartridge casings

A red Toyota vehicle found at the scene was deliberately demobilized by troops to prevent its future use for criminal operations.

Leadership Commends Troops

Force Commandant Moses Gara praised the intelligence team for providing timely information that enabled the operation's success. He also commended the troops for their resilience and professionalism in confronting hardened criminal elements.

Gara used the occasion to renew his call for sustained collaboration between security agencies and local communities. He urged residents to continue providing credible information to support ongoing efforts to tackle terrorism and other criminal activities in the region.

Strategic Significance

The raid represents the latest success in Operation Whirl Stroke's mission to dismantle criminal networks operating across Benue and neighboring states. The operation, launched years ago to combat the region's complex security challenges, has consistently targeted bandit hideouts in the dense forests that have long provided sanctuary for armed groups.

Katsina-Ala LGA has been a particular focus of security operations due to its history of violent attacks, kidnappings, and communal conflicts. Sunday's operation suggests that military pressure on these criminal networks remains unrelenting.

For residents of Mtan Village and surrounding communities, the dislodgement of a bandit leader's stronghold offers a rare moment of relief—though the knowledge that fleeing fighters may regroup elsewhere tempers any premature celebration. The troops, as Gara made clear, are not resting.
