The wife of popular Nigerian comedian Victor Nwaogu, better known as Nkubi, has shared a deeply disturbing encounter with a medical practitioner, sparking widespread outrage and renewed conversation about discrimination against persons with dwarfism in Nigeria.
In a viral video circulating across social media platforms, Mrs. Nkubi recounted the moment a doctor allegedly questioned her decision to have a child with her husband—simply because both are little people.
"Go to Your Brother-in-Law"
According to Mrs. Nkubi, the incident occurred during a routine pregnancy scan. After reviewing her results, the doctor inquired whether dwarfism ran in her family.
"I said yes, it was my husband," she recounted. "The doctor said, 'Why didn't you go to your brother-in-law or go outside to get pregnant instead of getting pregnant for your husband, or even get a sperm donor?'"
She expressed disbelief at the suggestion, adding: "That is what a doctor told me. Dwarfs are not given equal rights in this country at all."
Public Outrage and Divided Reactions
The video triggered an avalanche of reactions, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged remarks as unprofessional, discriminatory, and deeply hurtful.
"That's a bad doctor. Get him arrested by all means. He has already corrupted some ladies' minds with poison," one user wrote.
Another commentator observed: "For a supposedly religious country that preaches all humans are God's creatures and equal in the eyes of the Lord, I have never seen hypocrites like Nigerians. We preach what we don't practice."
However, the conversation also exposed troubling prejudices. A minority of commenters defended the doctor's position, arguing that he was simply offering professional counsel.
"If not for low self-esteem, why would someone with a birth defect get married to someone with the same birth defect and give birth to babies with more birth defects? That's not just ignorance but wickedness," one user wrote.
A Call for Dignity and Equal Treatment
Advocates have pushed back against such narratives, emphasizing that persons with dwarfism deserve the same rights to marry, build families, and make reproductive choices as anyone else.
"No one should ever be made to feel that their marriage, body, or ability to have a family is less valid because of their condition," one commenter stated. "Equality means respecting their choices, their relationships, and their humanity—not suggesting 'alternatives' that ignore their rights."
The incident has reignited calls for greater sensitivity training within Nigeria's healthcare system and broader societal education on the rights and dignity of persons living with disabilities.
