Woman Files for Divorce Over Husband's Village Belief That "Cheating Wives Must Die"

A Nigerian woman has revealed that she immediately ended her marriage after learning about a deeply unsettling tradition in her husband’s community that stipulated death for women who commit adultery.

In a viral Instagram video, the woman explained that upon discovering the belief, she felt her safety was in jeopardy. She described the cultural norm as less of a tradition and more of a direct threat.

“In their village, if a woman cheats, she dies. I was shocked… You people are looking for who to kill. If a woman cheats, she dies. God forbid,” she stated.

The woman emphasized that the realization left her no choice but to leave the marriage, regardless of any attempts to rationalize the practice. To her, it represented a dangerous and unacceptable risk.

Her story has since ignited intense debate online. Many users have criticized what they describe as harmful and unequal cultural practices, applauding her decision to prioritize her safety. Others, however, questioned her motives, with some commenters asking, “Did you intend to cheat before? It just shows the kind of woman you are.”

The discussion has broadened into a larger conversation about gender-biased traditions, toxic marital expectations, and personal autonomy in the face of cultural pressure.
