Gerardo Taracena, the acclaimed Mexican actor known for his roles in the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico and Mel Gibson’s 2006 film Apocalypto, has passed away at the age of 55.
His death was announced by the Mexican Academy of Film Art and Sciences, which honored him in an Instagram post as "fundamental to Mexican cinema," praising his "intense, honest, and profoundly human" screen presence.
Born in Mexico City in 1970, Taracena built a respected career in film and television, earning three Ariel Award nominations—Mexico’s highest cinematic honor—over the course of his decades-spanning work.
He gained international recognition for his portrayal of the Mayan warrior Zero Wolf in Apocalypto and later as drug smuggler Pablo Acosta in the Netflix crime drama Narcos: Mexico, a role that introduced him to a global audience.
Fans and colleagues have since expressed their condolences online, with many highlighting the depth and intensity he brought to his characters. The Mexican actors guild and cultural institutions also released statements mourning his passing and celebrating his contributions to the arts.
His most recent performance was in the Mexican series Cometierra, released on Prime Video in 2025.
