There are growing concerns that boxer Anthony Joshua’s injuries from Monday’s fatal car crash in Nigeria may be more serious than initially reported, potentially jeopardizing a planned £100 million mega-fight against Tyson Fury.
While Nigerian authorities and Joshua’s team have stated the champion sustained only minor injuries and is in stable condition, sources close to the boxer now suggest he may have suffered rib and knee damage. The psychological trauma of the accident, which killed two of his close friends and long-term team members, Sina Ghami and Kevin “Lateef” Ayodele, is also a significant factor in his recovery timeline.
The crash occurred when the Lexus SUV Joshua was traveling in, suspected of speeding, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Joshua was seated behind the driver and was rescued from the wreckage. Two other passengers escaped unharmed.
Official statements confirm Joshua is conscious, has spoken with family, and is under observation in a hospital. However, the severity of his physical and emotional recovery casts serious doubt on his ability to prepare for a potential bout against Tyson Fury, which had been targeted for late 2026. The boxing world now awaits further updates on his medical prognosis and future in the sport.
