In a continued push against insurgent forces, Nigerian troops have conducted a multi-day offensive in the Sambisa Forest, destroying terrorist camps and recovering a cache of weapons.
The operation, dubbed Desert Sanity V and executed under Operation Hadin Kai, involved units from the 21 Special Armoured Brigade and 26 Task Force Brigade, alongside volunteer forces, between December 29 and 30.
Operations on December 29
Troops began by clearing several abandoned terrorist enclaves around the Dure axis before advancing to the Sabil Huda area. Although the militants had fled prior to arrival, the operation yielded significant recoveries after Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams secured the site.
Items recovered included:
* Three AK-47 rifles with four magazines
* Over 100 rounds of various ammunition calibers
* Two hand grenades
Additionally, multiple terrorist shelters were demolished, and four discovered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were safely detonated.
Operations on December 30
The offensive continued as troops targeted several other known militant hubs, including the Ukuba axis, Parisu, and Somalia Camp. These sites were also found deserted, with evidence suggesting the insurgents retreated due to prior military strikes in the region.
During this phase, troops destroyed more shelters and recovered an 81mm mortar base plate and another hand grenade.
Military sources noted visible damage from earlier strikes on a camp behind Ukuba, indicating sustained pressure on the insurgents' infrastructure. The operation remains active, with forces working to deny terrorists freedom of movement and further degrade their capabilities in the region.
