Widespread Protests and Government Shutdown Grip Iran for Fourth Day

Iran entered a government-ordered shutdown on Wednesday as protests over a deepening economic crisis continued for a fourth consecutive day, with businesses, universities, and offices closed across 21 provinces.

Demonstrators clashed with security forces in several cities, with some of the most intense confrontations reported in Fasa, where videos showed crowds storming a governor’s office complex. Nationwide, protesters were heard chanting slogans against the government and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The unrest coincides with significant leadership changes. President Masoud Pezeshkian appointed a new central bank chief to address the severe economic turmoil, while Supreme Leader Khamenei named a hardline commander as deputy leader of the Revolutionary Guards, signaling a firm response to the ongoing civil dissent.
