In a moment of unprecedented drama at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final on Sunday evening, the Senegal national team staged an on-field boycott to protest a controversial last-minute penalty awarded to Morocco, only to witness their opponents miss the crucial spot-kick.
The incident unfolded in the 90th minute when referee Jean Jacques Ndala Ngambo, following a VAR review, awarded a penalty to Morocco for a perceived foul by Senegal’s El Hadji Malick Diouf on Brahim Diaz.
In furious protest, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw called his players off the pitch. The resulting standoff lasted for 13 tense minutes before captain Sadio Mané urged his teammates to return to the field.
The drama escalated further as Moroccan striker Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty, only to miss, leaving the score level and forcing the match into extra time.
