Former Attorney-General Malami Surrenders to DSS After Prolonged Standoff at Kuje Prison

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has surrendered to operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), ending a week-long standoff that began after he was granted bail but prevented from leaving the Kuje Correctional Facility.

According to reports, DSS agents had maintained a tight security cordon around the prison since Malami’s bail was approved, effectively blocking his release despite fulfilling all court conditions. This turned a routine legal process into a tense stalemate.

The situation escalated last Friday when DSS operatives rearrested Malami’s son, Abdulaziz, as he attempted to leave the prison under what sources described as an irregular arrangement allegedly encouraged by his father. The son had been remanded alongside Malami and his wife in a high-profile ₦8.7 billion money laundering case.

Malami’s surrender on Monday came hours after activist Omoyele Sowore announced plans to visit Kuje Prison to intervene in the matter.

The DSS’s heightened surveillance at Kuje began in early January, with over 50 operatives deployed to monitor movements, reportedly to prevent Malami from evading further investigation into terrorism-related activities separate from the corruption charges.

Malami, his wife, and son face 16 counts of money laundering involving billions of naira. They have pleaded not guilty, and the case is proceeding to trial.
