NATO Ambassador Defends U.S. Focus on Greenland, Says Europe "Overreacts"

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker defended the Trump administration’s heightened interest in Greenland, describing it as a vital national security interest rather than an overreach, and suggesting European allies tend to "overreact" to Washington's strategic moves.

Whitaker argued that Greenland's location makes it the "northern flank of the continental United States" and essential to American defense planning, especially as melting Arctic ice opens new navigation routes and raises geopolitical competition in the region.

"This is ultimately an issue between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland," Whitaker stated, adding that recent diplomatic talks have been constructive. He urged European allies to let "cooler heads prevail" rather than inflame tensions.

Speaking from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Whitaker also emphasized the need for NATO members to boost defense spending and capabilities, citing President Trump’s "peace through strength" approach. He pointed to Poland as a positive example, while noting that other allies lag behind their commitments.

The ambassador stressed that the U.S. is committed to ensuring NATO's political agreements translate into real military readiness, particularly in light of ongoing threats from Russia.
