The Nigerian Air Force has reported conducting successful airstrikes in Borno State, killing more than 40 militants and destroying approximately 10 canoes in operations targeting insurgent groups near Lake Chad.
According to Air Force spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame, the strikes took place on January 15 and 16 in the Musarram and Azir communities. The operation was launched based on intelligence that militants were massing in canoes to launch an attack on Baga town and the fish dam area around Lake Chad.
In a statement, Ejodame said that “three bombing runs broke up the group, with fleeing gunmen tracked into nearby trees and neutralized.” A subsequent strike in Azir targeted insurgents regrouping under trees after an earlier clash, restoring order in the area.
Borno State remains the focal point of a 17-year Islamist insurgency led by groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The militants frequently use the region’s difficult terrain to launch assaults on military convoys and civilian communities.
The Nigerian military’s recent aerial campaign signals heightened pressure on insurgent activities in the northeast. The operations follow increased security coordination, including U.S. airstrikes in December 2025 targeting Islamic State-linked militants in northwestern Nigeria.
