A former senior U.S. defense intelligence official has detailed the extensive military preparations currently underway as the United States weighs a potential military response to Iran.
Mark Chandler, in a recent Fox News appearance, explained that despite President Donald Trump’s earlier statements on possible action, any U.S. military move would be delayed to ensure it is decisive and overwhelming, rather than merely symbolic.
“If we’re going to use military force, we need to use overwhelming military action on the various targets in Iran,” Chandler said, noting that U.S. Central Command is already managing multiple operations, including recent strikes against al Qaeda and ISIS leaders in Syria.
He added that the U.S. is moving “bombers, ships, fighter aircraft, and air defense capabilities” into the region as part of a strategic buildup. This deployment is intended both to provide military options and to allow time for potential diplomatic solutions.
Chandler expressed hope for diplomacy but cautioned that dealing with what he called a “rogue regime” in Iran reduces its likelihood of success.
The ongoing military mobilization also reflects logistical challenges, including the need to balance forces already deployed in other theaters, such as the 12 ships currently stationed off the coast of Venezuela.
