Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has addressed the touchline incident with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s Round of 16 match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, assuring that there is no lingering issue between the two.
The widely discussed exchange occurred in the 63rd minute of Nigeria’s match when Osimhen appeared visibly frustrated after not receiving a pass. Television cameras captured him saying, “Hey, hey, it’s a team game. Listen to me, bro.”
Lookman calmly replied, “Bro, you scored two. You got two.” Shortly afterward, Osimhen signaled to be substituted and was replaced by Moses Simon.
At full time, Osimhen walked straight down the tunnel instead of joining team celebrations, fueling speculation of a disagreement.
Clarity from Osimhen
In a post-match statement, the Napoli forward clarified the situation and praised Lookman.
“Lookman knows my thoughts towards him. I spoke with him in person and everything is clear,” Osimhen stated. He also expressed support for Lookman’s potential African Footballer of the Year recognition, calling him a “clear favourite.”
“It will be a big moment for him… It is definitely a reward for hard work and for what he has done this season,” Osimhen added.
Lookman’s Earlier Response
Ademola Lookman had earlier dismissed suggestions of a rift in a press conference. “Nothing happened between Osimhen and me. It was just a discussion on the pitch,” he explained.
Man of the Match Performance
Osimhen was named Man of the Match in Nigeria’s 2–0 quarterfinal win over Algeria, scoring one goal and assisting another in a dominant individual display.
He later thanked Nigerian fans for their support and expressed confidence in the team’s momentum heading into the semifinals.
With tensions officially resolved, focus now shifts to Nigeria’s semifinal clash as they continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
