Presidency's AI-Generated Image of Tinubu-Kagame Meeting Raises Questions

An image shared by the Nigerian Presidency depicting a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris has been flagged as artificially generated, raising concerns about official communication.

On Sunday, President Tinubu and his aides posted the photograph on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as showing a private lunch where the leaders discussed global and African affairs. The posts were widely circulated before a community note was added to the president's tweet, stating the image "appears to be AI-generated," citing telltale indicators from the AI tool Grok.

The use of the fabricated image has prompted scrutiny from the public and observers, who question why an AI-generated visual was employed for a matter of state diplomacy. Notably, no reference to the meeting or a corresponding photograph appeared on President Kagame’s verified social media account.

As of press time, the Presidency has offered no explanation for using the AI-generated image or confirmed whether an authentic photograph from the reported engagement exists. The incident highlights growing challenges in verifying digital content, even from official sources.
