Protesters at APC Secretariat Demand Wike’s Removal Over Alleged Disrespect to Party Leaders

A group of youths staged a demonstration at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, calling for the removal of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over accusations of disrespecting the party’s leadership.

The protesters carried placards with messages such as “President Tinubu, sack Wike now,” “APC no be Wike property,” and “Stop disrespecting APC members.”

Background of the Dispute

The protest follows a public clash between Wike and the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, concerning political developments in Rivers State. Basiru had previously urged Wike to resign from his ministerial role, criticizing what he called the minister’s “obsession” with Rivers politics.

Wike responded sharply during a stakeholders’ meeting in Oyigbo Local Government Area on January 5, warning Basiru to stay away from Rivers affairs.

“I want to say it here — take this message to the national secretary to leave Rivers state alone. Don’t take our support for Mr President for granted,” Wike stated.

Political Tensions in Rivers

The FCT minister has been actively opposing the re-election of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in December 2025. Wike has accused Fubara of violating a prior political agreement.

The protest underscores growing internal tensions within the APC regarding the influence of appointed officials on party affairs and state-level politics.
