Yeni Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has publicly addressed the recent heated exchange between her brother, Seun Kuti, and global music star Wizkid.
The conflict began when Seun criticized Wizkid's fans for comparing the singer to Fela, arguing it diminished their father's legacy. Wizkid later responded with a series of social media posts containing insults and declaring himself "greater than Fela," which intensified the online debate.
Speaking on TVC's Your View, Yeni revealed she deliberately avoided joining the social media fray due to the toxic nature of the discourse. She expressed affection for Wizkid, recalling his early performances at the Afrika Shrine during Felabration.
“I love Wizkid a lot… I remember when he featured at Shrine during Felabration, he was a backup singer, so there is no way I can never not like Wizkid,” she stated.
However, Yeni expressed disappointment that Wizkid did not intervene sooner to calm the situation. She emphasized the need for unity, especially as Nigeria prepares to honor Fela at the upcoming Grammy Awards, where he is set to receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Let us mend fences… we are just about to go and celebrate our icon at the Grammy, and you are all getting into this dirty argument. The stain is not only on the Fela family but on Nigeria,” she appealed.
Yeni urged respect for Fela's legacy, noting that his enduring relevance nearly three decades after his death is a testament to his greatness. She concluded by advising that disputes should be among the living, leaving the deceased icon out of personal conflicts.
