Community Rallies with Nearly $200K in Donations After NY Police Officer and New Mother Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver

A Nassau County police officer and new mother was killed on her way to work Saturday morning when a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and struck her vehicle, sparking an outpouring of community support.

Officer Patricia Espinosa, 42, was driving to her shift when her car was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The driver, 20-year-old Matthew Smith, has been charged with driving while intoxicated. A passenger in Smith’s vehicle, 25-year-old John Andali, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Espinosa, who joined the Nassau County Police Department in 2017, is survived by her husband—fellow officer Francisco Malaga—and their 2-year-old daughter, Mia. She came from a family deeply committed to law enforcement; two of her brothers also serve as police officers.

In a statement, the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association described her death as a “profound loss” and praised her service as honorable, courageous, and compassionate.

A GoFundMe campaign established to support her family has raised nearly $200,000 in two days, reflecting widespread community and colleague solidarity.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until her burial later this week.
