Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has voiced deep regret over the involvement of young military officers in an alleged failed coup plot, stating that his “pain” is for the junior personnel whose careers are now at risk.
In remarks reported by Channels Television, General Musa focused on the influence a senior officer—referred to as “the colonel”—had in drawing inexperienced subordinates into the scheme. “My pain is for the young officers the colonel has put in this mess—they’ll have to face the law,” he said.
Musa emphasized that while all personnel are subject to military justice, many of the young officers were likely motivated by misplaced trust in a superior or failed to grasp the gravity of their actions. He described the situation as a breakdown in ethical leadership and stressed that senior officers carry a responsibility to guide, not mislead, those under their command.
The Defence Chief reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to constitutional order and professional discipline. He assured the public that the institution remains stable and loyal to Nigeria’s democracy, calling the incident a “painful lesson” in maintaining vigilance, mentorship, and welfare within the ranks.
