Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan Advocates for Polygamy, Reveals He Is Seeking Divorce to “Marry Many Wives”

Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has publicly reversed his earlier stance on polygamy, now advising men to marry multiple wives and revealing that he is currently seeking a divorce in order to do the same.

Speaking at a watch party for his latest film, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens, Afolayan credited his upbringing in a polygamous family for his change of perspective. In a video that has since gone viral, he stated, “I am in and out of court seeking a divorce. I don’t mind the toll. So I can marry many wives now.”

He attributed much of his personal and professional success to his late father, who had ten wives. “Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan,” he said. “For the men, marry many women, or rather be involved with many women… If my father didn’t, he would not have born me, and that is the honest truth.”

This endorsement marks a sharp departure from his position in a 2021 interview, where he stated he would not follow his father’s path after witnessing the familial strains it caused. At that time, he noted that his father’s 25 children from multiple marriages faced bonding challenges due to language and cultural differences.

Afolayan’s latest remarks have sparked significant reaction online, with many observers pointing out the contradiction between his past and present views on marriage and family.
