Omah Lay Reveals Past Misunderstanding with Davido Led to Grammy-Nominated Collaboration

The Afrobeats star opens up about initial assumptions and eventual breakthrough partnership.

Nigerian singer Omah Lay recently shared that he once believed fellow music star Davido “didn’t like” him—a misconception that later turned into their Grammy-nominated collaboration With You.

Speaking in a Grammy red carpet interview with OkayAfrica, Omah Lay reflected on the moment he realized his assumption was wrong. He recalled watching a clip of Davido reacting positively to his music while at home. “I lost my mind,” he said. “I thought we had a beef. I thought he didn’t like me.”

The singer explained that after the two connected, the collaboration felt natural and effortless. “We connected so well after that. Boom—magic happened,” Omah Lay added.

Released in 2025, With You features Davido and earned Omah Lay his first Grammy nomination. When asked about his hopes for the award, he expressed pride in Nigeria’s strong representation in the category, which also included Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid.

Ultimately, the award for Best African Music Performance went to South African singer Tyla for Push 2 Start. Despite the loss, the nomination underscores Omah Lay’s rising profile and Nigeria’s ongoing influence in the global Afrobeats scene.
