The Nigerian Army has rescued more than 1,000 hostages and killed several notorious bandit leaders during a sustained offensive across the North-West, significantly degrading criminal networks in the region.
At the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) event in Sokoto, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding the 8 Division, detailed the successes of Operation FASAN YAMMA. From January through December 2025, troops have freed 1,023 kidnapped victims from forest hideouts and recovered substantial weaponry, including 189 AK-47 rifles and over 4,300 rounds of ammunition.
The operation has also neutralized key bandit commanders, destroyed camps, and seized more than 4,000 rustled livestock and 305 motorcycles. According to Maj-Gen Ajose, the deployment of specialized rapid strike forces has been instrumental in targeting bandit enclaves with precision.
“Communities that were previously under siege are breathing again,” he stated, noting that farmers and traders are returning to normal activities with improved security in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states.
The Sokoto State Governor’s Special Adviser on Security, Col Ahmed Abdul Usman (rtd), commended the military’s efforts and reaffirmed the government’s support to eradicate banditry completely.
While acknowledging progress, the Army emphasized that operations are ongoing. Efforts are also being made to improve troop welfare through renovated barracks and enhanced medical facilities. The recent gains have offered residents in the region renewed hope after years of insecurity.
