Turkey Arrests 115 Suspected ISIS Members Over Holiday Attack Plans

Turkish police have arrested 115 suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members in nationwide raids, thwarting alleged plans to carry out attacks on non-Muslims during Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued 137 arrest warrants after learning of an ISIS call to action. Police raided 124 locations, detaining 115 individuals and seizing weapons, ammunition, and organizational documents.

Turkey, which shares a long border with Syria, has become a hub for ISIS operatives following the collapse of the group’s so-called caliphate. The country has suffered multiple ISIS-claimed attacks over the past decade, including the 2015 Ankara bombings that killed 109 people.

In a separate operation, Turkish intelligence captured Mehmet Goren near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Goren, a Turkish national, is accused of serving as an ISIS administrator involved in planning suicide attacks in multiple countries.

Turkish security forces have intensified counter-terror operations in recent years, disrupting several plots—including attacks targeting churches and synagogues in 2023.
